pregnancy fertility

Many women are surprised to learn that their ability to conceive decreases with age. According to the CDC “A women’s chances of having a baby decrease rapidly every year after 30”. ACOG (The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) states that at age 32 there is a decrease in fecundity (ability to produce offspring), with a more rapid decline after age 37. How can this be, right? What occurs as we age is that our ovaries become less able to release eggs, there is a smaller number of eggs remaining, eggs are not as healthy, there is a greater chance of conditions (fibroids, endometriosis, etc.) that can negatively affect fertility and the chance of miscarriage is higher.

So, what’s a girl to do? There are many options available for testing to evaluate egg supply and options for cryopreservation (freezing of eggs). There are also genetic tests that can be helpful in planning for pregnancy. We encourage women to be proactive and take steps to enhance their chances of having a healthy pregnancy and baby, if and when they desire. Be sure to have this discussion with your healthcare provider at your next visit. Unfortunately, time is not our friend when it comes to fertility. It is best to know your options and plan accordingly.
